Blue Eye Samurai - A Pedantic, Cultural Review of Love

I’d hesitate to call Spike an idiot, but I think I get your point that he can’t see beyond his past to what he has now or could have in the future. I never really understood the line that one of his eyes only sees the past while the other only sees the present, but he lost one of those eyes due to past trauma and it seems like he always struggles to focus on one or the other. His past trauma defines him, and he often keeps the present eye closed, much to his own detriment and that of those around him. Often, he can’t see what he has, only what he’s lost. He’s tragic, and though he hides it under layers of cool, his connections to the past dull his connections to those in the present.

In order to have peace, one must prepare for battle. Oda is pretty much like Cao Cao in China and Longshank in England. They always depict them as evil but they don't look at the chaotic time period during that era.

Since the world needs another cowboy Bebop, and it's not a reboot nor anything like it. I say, do whatever it takes, do you make your own cowboy Bebop like show. If not that, make your own American comic book or or an Japanese comic, that's basically, a successor, to the show, cowboy Bebop. Within a way, there's already a cowboy Bebop manga, it's called, cowboy Bebop 2, a manga that's really truly difficult to get your hands on. I've looked this up, years ago.

Pro-tip about getting older; stay active. It really is true. You don't have to play sports or whatever, just make sure you walk for at least an hour a day. Maybe take up yoga. That's all you really need to do. Along with making sure you practice sitting on the floor and standing up from it so you still have those muscles if you ever have a bad fall.

Life between these two places (US & Japan) is so different that it feels like they are different places. Covid and the anxiety that came with that, being away from Japan and the anxiety that came with that, gave me nightmares.

Aristocratic samurai. Proletarian cowboy. Btw, that Vurez background music definitely sounds like a track from Wild Guns. Is it a remix? Do you...like...Vomitron? 8:34 Servitude. That's the one that irks me. Everything else makes sense except for that doggone servitude bit. 9:25 Ackchyually, if yer gonna wield blades akimbo, one of them should be shorter than the other. The shorter one would be used for parrying. A wakizashi would be the kind of short sword typically paired with a katana. A European swordfighter might prefer a rapier and a parrying dagger. 9:46 Here's something I've learned from watching Skallagrim and Shadiversity. In infantries both East and West, pole arms really were the go-to "weapons of war." Swords were more like sidearms or backup weapons in large-scale fighting between full-scale armies. Pole arms like billhooks could be cheaply mass-produced and were easy to maintain. 11:07 Proto-Jakobs meets Proto-Torgue 20:03 / 20:13 That's actually a gutless, mindless, authoritarian, and collectivist philosophy. To truly have courage, one must destroy their so-called "master." To lay waste to one's own oppressor is the greatest form of Justice. 20:29 What about the "honor of self?" True honor doesn't come from servitude. It comes from freedom. The greatest freedom is self-liberation. Maybe I just have a left-hand-path Randian mindset, but I'll never understand the appeal of authoritarianism or collectivism.

So there you are, you are in the audience of a kabuki show. Part of the story is how Lord Whoever is killed by assassins, presumably ninja. Lord Whoever is center stage, confident in his power, behind him scenery moves, perhaps stormy clouds being dramatic looking. The moment must be drawing near but you see no actors in ruffian costume. Then suddenly at a drum beat the "clouds" are dropped and the Koroko you were deliberatly ignoring are suddenly holding weapons! They cut down Lord Whoever! they duck behind the clouds and those roll off stage! You have never seen such a bold choice, so effectively illustrating the shocking stealth and brutal swiftness of the assassination. "as though nobody was there at all" Everyone in the audience is blown away! Depicting ninja with stagehands! How clever! how bold! Everyone talks about it and goes to see this shocking performance! But if you know the surpise is coming, its not quite the same. And of course it is copied relentlessly, but its copies don't do so well and need adjusting. The copies all have deliberate named ninja characters cause thats hot right now, but dressing them as koroko is too confusing and would only make sense if they were un named ninja specifically in that instance of surprising the audience. So for a while theres a bunch of ninja that are identified by wearing black, but not Koroko so they can be told apart. But the fad has moved on in a few years but that one defining moment made an association between black clothes and ninja in the cultural zeitgeist

I didn't watch Cowboy Bebop or anything else on Cartoon Network because I was too busy growing up and being born to watch the show, watched a hefty amount of video essays from people around that era praising shows from that era, and now I'm hooked on watching as many of the classics as possible. Or was up until I finally had a gender identity crisis during my egg crack, nowadays I'm bouncing between manic highs and depressive lows and I'm basically forcing myself to take life easily because everything in my head is bordering on insanity I would not be surprised I might just end up like Spike Spiegal one day. I've had several midlife crises' since I was 8 or 9 years old, especially because I could not see my future being fulfilled because of the type of person I was and the circumstances I was put through. I genuinely do think that every single possible golden year I want to have will be long past me and I'll be spending my days going through life wishing I could've been the type of person I wanted to be, even if I would go on to regret it. Because I honestly regret huge portions of my life and most of the moments I can be proud of are arguably nothing more than stepping stones toward greater things. I'm slowly becoming nothing more than a footnote in the history of RUclips, a person who promised great things and showed great promise throughout her life and yet accomplished nothing. I hate that. Hey, if you have an itch for existential anime, I have an animation project just for you that I'm working on. It's currently called "The StoryTeller's Epic Fable" and it mostly stars me in my own dreamworld just wandering about from place to place as I go through my old life and try my best to describe everything that's happened to me throughout my life and as I try to piece everything together. I may not be over any sort of the word "prime years" Heck, I'm honestly 18 right now and approaching 19, but it already feels like I wasted 13 of those 18 years being someone and living a life that I don't know how to feel about because I don't remember living that life. I can remember bits and pieces, but it takes some serious exertion of force to do so. That's some serious time displacement, it feels like everyone else in my life was living my life and I was giving them my memories rather than letting myself have those memories. I wish I could've done something throughout my life to record those memories, but oh well, I guess I can start now.

Unlike others, I knew that the day I graduated was going to be the last great thing to EVER HAPPEN in my life and I was scared a depressed. Now I look around and see all my friends and acquaintances have moved on and continue to change and “live on”, but not me. In all honesty my life, if I even have one or can call it that, has been forced into stagnation from forces outside of myself. Now I just work 5 days a week for $14.35 an hour to support myself my mom and my brother. And the other two days I try to decompress myself or help the family with some sort of business. Normally shopping or something like that

As a 25+ year anime fan who is on the precipice of middle age, I do relate to this video. Anime hits differently for me, even for the series I love. And I have another weird aspect to my relationship with anime. Up to maybe 5 years ago, I took a long break from being a major anime fan. Not that I stopped watching it, but it stopped being a major part of my life. When I did come back to anime, I was (and still is) kinda disappointed with the state of the industry. Most modern anime just doesn't click with me. I watch anime every day now and I do watch a new series once in a while, but 90% of the shows I watch are 20+ years old. It doesn't help that my favourite genre, mecha, is far from its prime in the post-Gundam 80s and post-Eva late 90s and 2000s. Does any older old anime fan feel the same way? Maybe it's just like taste in music where most people hit a point when they start hating the new music.

I don't think we'll ever get the next Cowboy Bebop, it was lightning in a bottle, imitated but never duplicated, not even Watanabe himself could do it, he came pretty close with Samurai Champloo but still not fully there. We've had shows with a similar style like Trigun, Baccano and Black Lagoon and we've had melancholic introspective media like Evangelion, Blade Runner, Paris Texas and so on but I still haven't seen anything new that perfectly balances both those worlds. They either go to one of those extremes or the other

It's a show that can heal the desperately hurt and drip with style while doing it. It walks with grace, unhindered by what will sell and what will rise, and never worries about falling. I hope to create something just as awesome. Even if it takes me my second lifetime. <3

I've been watching your videos since I was probably around 7 or 8 maybe, and now I'm 17 with my 18th birthday _fast_ approaching, and despite how it's seen by many as when your life really starts, I'm absolutely dreading that birthday. I won't get too into it (not because I don't want to, mind you. I just don't have it in me to do so), but in may of last year, I've dealt with some big loss, and I've really been struggling about a lot of stuff since then, especially throughout the time I've spent as a 17 year old. But, silly as it may sound, this video breakdown has given me some stuff to think about, and in a good way too, I'm pretty sure.

oddly enough this really spoke to me, almost a year ago I retired out of the military and I've been dealing with the similar feel of "Ok.... Now What?!" at least thats what I've been calling it. What is gonna be the drive force behind my life now that I no longer have the uniform pushing me. Fearing that nothing I can do will ever top what i have already done. but you know what I've been doing??? been convincing myself that I have not reached the peak yet. I've been working out harder than i did while i was in the miltary (I was a computer guy so, my physical fitness was just enough to pass, and the laxing of the rules due to covid didn't help any). I'm planning on trips i've always wanted to take in vehicles I've always wanted to own. build my dream home in my dream location. maybe finally settle down and have a family and write that great American Novel or make the greatest indie game the world has ever seen, to do all the mad scientist projects i've always wanted to do but never could cuz the neighbors would call the cops on me. The thing you have to convince yourself about growing older is that the midlife crisis is not a sign that the story is over, instead its just begin of a new chapter, hopefully one were we get the version of the hero that has been foreshadowed for the whole story. just like everything we have to face it head on. I will do it, you will do it, we will all do it, and in the end, it maybe nothing spectacular in the grand scheme of things, but by god, this is our story, and it will go the way WE want it to go. Whose with me?

Life isn't a story. It doesn't have a peak. 99.9% of people never do anything impactful or plot-worthy. But most people still find a purpose with family or careers. Your purpose will change over time. If you ever feel like your life is stagnating, ask what your purpose on life is. If you come up blank, find a new purpose.

I feel ya on this, I'm 39yrs old, and next year I will be 40 and I feel old as hell and still single I'm kinda afraid that I'm going to die alone but yet I'm still not giving up and I dream of traveling outside the United States someday and my body is starting to hurt especially my lower back and I'm thinking of going back to school yup life is a roller-coaster of highs and lows but it's nice to know that I'm not alone in this cause I'm going through my midlife crisis myself but I know I will overcome and move on.
